Forward or Backward: YUAN Zuzhi's Overseas Experience Writing

1883年春,袁祖志随唐廷枢赴欧洲考察。亲历西方文明,让首出国门的袁祖志遭遇了极大的视觉和思想冲击,反映在其笔下则表现为对此一经历书写策略和书写角度的特殊选择。虽然此次出行为官方行为,但袁祖志在记录这一旅行经历的文字中却表现出极为鲜明的个体性,其书写策略亦表现出当时传统知识分子在转型时期,身份焦虑下的复杂心态。然而,作为末代名士的袁祖志最终并没有因此一经历而奋发图强,而是和大多数末代文人一样终被历史遗忘。

In the spring of 1883,YUAN Zuzhi went to Europe to study with TANG Tingshu and witnessed the western civilization. It was the first time for him to go abroad,that impressed him with great visual impact and shock. Later in his poems,he wrote about it from special writing strategy and angle. Although the trip abroad was official,YUAN Zuzhi showed distinctive individuality in his writing of this life experience.His writing strategy showed the complex state of mind and the identity anxiety of the traditional intellectuals in the transition period. As a celebrity of his time,YUAN Zuzhi did not strive to be better,instead,he was forgotten as most of the scholars in Qing dynasty.
