西方思想的影响,追求人生事业的成功,笃定的宗教信仰,爱慕时尚,教育的洗礼,经济的独立以及对自由生活的追求等方面的因素,是近代独身主义盛行的强大助力。抱定独身主义的群体,并不全然是新式思想的践行者,其中亦不乏托名伪装的守寡节烈主义者。独身主义现象背后体现的是近代中国旧观新念之间冲突与对峙的社会现实。

Major reasons for the prevalence of celibacy in the modern times included the influence of western thought,people＇s pursuit of career success,steadfast religious belief,craze for fashion,education,economic independence,and eager for freedom.Those who were determined to live a celibate life were not all practitioners of new ideas and thoughts. Some of them were only supporters of widow chastity in disguise. Behind the phenomenon of celibacy was a society where the new and the old values were confronting each other.
