《字林西报》(North China Daily News),又称《字林报》,前身为《北华捷报》(North China Herald),1856年创办于上海,是英国人在中国出版的历史最久的英文报纸,也曾经是在中国出版的最有影响力的一份英文报纸。以《字林西报》中的体育信息为主,试图勾勒出当年以英国人眼光为基点的体育活动,钩沉出《字林西报》中相关的体育信息,对体育史料进行翻译以供汉语学者进行研究探讨,并适时地再现驻沪西侨的体育生活方式以及弥补近代上海体育史研究者的相关的空白点。
North China Daily News was founded in Shanghai in 1856. Its predecessor was North China Herald. It was an oldest English newspaper published by the British and was the most influential English newspaper published in China. Based on the sport information appeared in North China Daily News, the article tries to depict the sports activities from the eyes of the then English people, pick out the relative sport information in the newspaper and put the sport historical materials into Chinese for the researches of the Chinese scholars.It aims to duly reproduce the sport lifestyle of the Western nationals in Shanghai and makes up for the related blank spots of the modern researches on Shanghai sports history.
