《九章集》一卷一章《生命是什么,人是什么?》是普罗提诺去世前夕的作品。文章在追问情感来源的基础上,探讨了灵魂与肉体的关系,解释了情感的本质,并将灵魂分为灵魂的低级部分和灵魂的高级部分。普罗提诺认为人的情感来源于身体的感觉,身体的感觉是灵魂的低级部分与肉体结合所产生的存在。人是理性的灵魂存在,人应该与身体的非理性感觉相分离,在智性灵魂的指导之下产生理性的行为活动。智性灵魂所形成的活动即是理性的人,是灵魂的高级部分。在智性灵魂的视域下,普罗提诺用理性和净化,治疗身体的非理性情感。

EnneadⅠ.1had been written by Plotinus not long before he was dead.It discusses the origin of emotion which bases on the relations between soul and body.Plotinus divides the soul into lower part and higher part.He thinks that emotion comes from the combination of lower soul with body.Human is rational soul.We should draw the irrational emotion away from body.We should act in the direction of intellectual soul.In the vision of intellectual soul,Plotinus uses ration and purification to cure the irrational emotion.
