Ji Xiaolan's Spirit of Seeking Truth

纪晓岚性"孤直",饱学经史,评点《史通》,去其冗漫纰缪者,作《史通削繁》,存其精华。为《安阳县志》作序,树立撰修方志的典范。其一生精力用于《四库提要》及《目录》。主张著述要直书,治学需考证,品评人物既不因长护短,也不以短掩长,实事求是。

Ji Xiaolan was＂dignified and upright＂and learned in Confucian classics and history. He commented on Shi Tong and published Shitong Xiaofan to keep the essence by reducing the redundancy and correcting errors. He wrote the preface for Anyang County Annals and set a good example by compiling the local chorography. He spent all his life on Siku Tiyao and Mulu. He advocated seeking truth in writing books and doing textual research on pursuing studies and also he insisted on telling truth in judging people with neither overstatement nor understatement.
