The novel Thrushes written by YOU Qin, a Chinese language writer in Singapore creates a typical "small potato", Ah Shun, among the Chinese people in Singapore. Ah Shun took part in the left-wing protest when he was young and studied at the Chinese school; during his middle age, he experienced three depressions of career, dream and family. As a common and periodic figure in the Chinese language novels in Singapore during the social reform, the image of "small potato" shows the changes of Chinese schools, the decline of Chinese language in Singapore and the fate of the characters, it also reflects the contradicted state of mind of the Chinese people in Singapore in the self-identity between localization and chinization in Singapore.
