元好问《中州集》因诗存人,于其人生平、仕履、交游、性情、佚事、传闻等,共撰就254篇作者小传,厘为10卷。这些小传的重要性,不仅于金代文学史料极具辑存遗佚的不朽价值,更为重要的是它保存了金代文学批评史尤其是诗歌批评史的最为可靠、最为权威、最为直接的难得资料。这些诗论观点,结合其它零散的见解,可以从整体上把握元氏的诗学观,他既承接传统又大胆创新,在中国文学批评史上是一个承前启后的重要人物。
