顿悟和渐悟是佛教禅宗见性成佛的两大法门,依此两大法门,禅宗演成南宗和北宗两大宗派。"顿悟"因强调修道者对真如境界的顷刻间觉悟而演化成慧能的南宗一系;"渐悟"则因注重通过次第修习逐步觉悟,遂成北宗的神秀禅风。顿渐之争的展开最终取得了"顿中有渐,渐中有顿,顿渐相资双修"的共识,即渐是顿悟的前提,顿是渐悟的结果,二者相互渗透,相互依赖,相资为用,共同实现对自我真如佛性的觉悟与回归。
