Objective To find out the possible correlation of the level of serum testosterone to metabolic syndrome in female patients. Method Four hundred thirty-seven women over 40 years of age were chosen as the subjects of the study. According to PENN- 5 stages, the subjects were divided into 5 groups, namely, group A( of women having normal menstruation),group B( of women having perimenopause),group C( of women having early menopause),group D( of women having middle menopause),and group E( of women having late menopause). The testosterone level was detected with automated chemiluminescent method. The correlation of serum testosterone level to metabolic syndrome was analyzed by using SPSS16. 0. Findings The median testosterone level in 437 women was 0. 60 nmol / L. Compared to that of group A,he testosterone level in women experiencing menopause dropped significantly( P〈0. 05). Of 437 women,91 women suffered metabolic syndrome. The rates of metabolic syndrome observed in the groups experiencing menopause varied and the difference among them was statistically significant( χ^2= 19. 461,P = 0. 001). The rates of metabolic syndrome in the group with low level of testosterone, the group with middle level of testosterone, and the group with high level of testosterone were23. 6%,20. 5% and 18. 2%,respectively. Conclusion Low level of testosterone may become a risk factor that gives rise to metabolic syndrome and thus the level of testosterone can serve as an important variable in the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in women with menopause.
