This paper makes an effort to analyze the interweaving power of subversion and containment in Martin Eden from the perspective of new historicism. Subversion is achieved by exposing the deception of American dream, failure of individualism, and bourgeois hypocrisy. And writer's works are also inevitably suppressed by the mainstream ideology and formed in the "negotiation" of social power discourse.
