Sleeping Beauty' is the work of Yasunari Kawabata's later period, the absurdity of which has muddled many of its readers. So the exploration of its deeper connotation is indispensable in understanding the writer and his works as a whole. We can clearly see the coordinate and the natural development of the logic of this important work when we go back to all the works written by him before it and the frequent emergence of the same theme in them. 'The yearning knit for mother ' and 'the worship of virgin' exist even in his earliest works, and in the 1950s, he elaborated the conviction to demon and Buddhism, and the samsara of life and death is a theme pondered by him throughout his life. All the above mentioned is poetically expressed in his style in this comparatively short work. It's evident that the work radiates the decadent sentiments of modernism. However, the work, filled with Buddhist allegorical words, also presents author's peculiar philosophical thinking about life based on the oriental cultural convention. Therefore, it is a typical work of his that no one can overlook.
