Objective To develop the Chinese version of Attitudes about Mental Illness Associated Stigma Scale and test its reliability and validity. Methods According to Jones' translation model, the English version of Attitudes about Mental Illness Associated Stigma Scale(AMIASS) was translated into Chinese(AMIASS-C). The internal consistency reliability, construct validity,criterion-related validity and discriminant validity were tested. Results Exploratory factor analysis identified three factors, which could explain 58.95% of the total variance. The Coronach's αcoefficient of AMIASS-C was 0.75; the Coronach's α coefficients of negative stereotype factor and treatment/prognosis factor were 0.71 and 0.73,respectively. The correlation coefficients between the total score with negative stereotype factor score and treatment/prognosis factor score were 0.703 and 0.896,respectively. The correlation coefficient between two factors was 0.314. The total score of AMIASS-C was positively correlated with the score of Perceived Devaluation-Discrimination Scale and was able to distinguish the different attitude towards mental illness and the patients in different contact levels. Conclusion AMIASS-C is a simple,quick,easy-to-administer evaluating measurement, which can be used in the research of stigma of mental illness in mainland of China.
