The "blue-sky-and-starry-night"standard was set to assess air quality by Shandong provincial environmental protection departments, and the standard uses visibility as the main technical indicator. In order to investigate the capability of the figurative standard to indicate air quality, deep analysis is conducted using the monitoring data during 2013—2014. The results show that air visibility has a good correlation with particulate matter and is moderately correlated with gaseous pollutants. Based on the close relationship between visibility and air pollutants,the"blue-sky-and-starry-night"standard can roughly divide air pollutant levels into two categories: good and unhealthy, but it has different indicating capabilities for various pollutants.
