黄元御一生博学,治学讲究溯本求源,临证重视中气理论、扶阳抑阴,深明运气学说,用药有独到见解。黄氏著述,主论明确,阐释透彻,理必《内经》,法必仲景,药必《本经》,尊古崇圣之特色至为鲜明,援经据典若符节之合,成为历代学家系统全面诠释四部经典第一人。黄氏重视中气理论的重要作用和《内经》"天人合一"的观点,以其独特的视角,阐析运气与人体发病的关系。黄元御明运气之理,以天人相应观,立法立方,切合临床。黄氏临证,尊经据典,结合实践,屡有创新。处方用药多尊仲景,做《长沙药解》四卷,取《伤寒》、《金匮》所载药物162种,每药之下,首述其气味归经,性质功用,继录《伤寒》《金匮》凡用此药之方,是方论证,以印证其功用。黄元御治内伤杂病,首在调理脾胃,顾护中气,升清降浊,顾护四维。黄氏认为,瘟疫、温病同属热病,治疗绝不能同于伤寒。宗经典,创新方是黄元御对祖国医学的贡献。对于仲景未用之药,黄元御做《玉楸药解》,除个别药物引录《本经》之论及前人论述外,均系黄氏之心得见解。

Huang believes that plague and warm disease belong to fever, and treatments will not the same as typhoid fever.
