J. D. Salinger's autobiographical short story "The Laughing Man", which was wellknown in contemporary American literature has gained generations of readers' favor, despite the lack of deeper discussions by academics. With the approaches of narratology, this article analyses the complex narrative structure and the particular narrative perspective of this text to find its narrative tension, which is brought by the binary opposition between juveniles and adults. The rewriting of children's subjectivity by the contemporary authors, including Salinger, reflects the "Anti-growth" theme of American literature in the 20 th century. Moreover, it may lead current readers to rethink the children's subjectivity and growth education through their personal experience as well as the ethical value which is related to the contemporary spiritual lives.
