Within the traditional grammar, it is held that gradable or non-quantified adjectives can be nominalized while nomi- nalization does not occur in non-gradable or quantified adjectives, in English, the a-adjectives are usually categorized as the quantified type. As characterized by their fixed degrees of quantity, a-adjectives are not able to be nominalized any longer. By means of large corpora, it is found that a-adjectives do have their corresponding nominalizations and some use frequency in the related literatures. Further research reveals that when a-adjectives are modified by words of subjectivity or in a context of strong subjectivity ( e. g. a legendary story), they can be freely nominalized. It is concluded that subjectivity is an effective means to cancel morphological constraints on nominalization with a-adjectives.
