In his representative book A Portrait,Joyce reproduces the power relations in the Irish family, school and church systems through the growth of the protagonist Stephen. This thesis uses Foucault's key concepts about body, discourse, knowledge and power to analyze the power strategy, knowledge and discourse systems of the Irish institutions which restrain and control Stephen. Their discipline and punishments and Stephen's confessions are closely examined to present how the Irish youngsters represented by Stephen are molded into individuals who conform to the social norms. A Foucauldian reading of A Portrait is of great help to understand Joyce's analysis of the Irish society and his rebellion against it.
