From the perspective of feminism, this paper mainly analyzes the plots of Martin Eden and The Great Gatsby, focusing on how the cause and effect relationship is created by organizing events in their plots to build the binary oppositions between the fictional heroes and heroines. This type of literary convention is involved in the traditionally canonized literary creations, which has become part of literary discourse in a patriarchal society and kept producing the "knowledge" about women by "literary power". This kind d literary discourse should be criticized for its formation of female !dentity of an "other" in a patriarchal society.
