As a prominent feature in George Eliot's novels, landscape has been interpreted from Dutch painting, Ruskin 's artistic views and feminist perspectives by critics to reveal her realism and the humanitarian concern centering around sympathy, but the Englishness encoded in the landscape is ignored. English landscape is pastoral and beautiful, whereas the European landscape is"sublime", even despicable. At the same time the reference to France should not be overlooked. Through constructing a conservative and evolutionary Englishness by landscape, Eliot attempts to express her pride in being English and the wish to increase the national cohesion.
