护封印最早起源于封泥,依存于简牍,古人将书信装在囊中用绳捆扎,绳结处用盖了印的封泥加封,东晋之后随着简牍的消失,使用封泥的时代也随之结束。纸张的广泛使用产生了新的通信和用印方式,印章由原来的白文为主逐渐变为朱文为主,书信变为纸质文书,从而出现了＂护封＂印这类的书束印,其中不乏上好的材质和精美的篆刻,值得细细品味。

In ancient times, some letters had been put into a bag and were tied by a rope. After that, a kind of sealing-clay with stamp was used onto the joint of the rope to guard against its being opened by unauthorized persons.
