On the Significance of the Words of Judgment in the Xici

《系辞》最早系统诠释了《周易》本经中断辞的意义问题,明确界定了断辞的内涵,阐明了断辞的意义来源及其意义功能,并对断辞内涵的不同类型及其关联给予了奠基性的阐述。历代笺注诠解针对这些问题做进一步深入阐释,在易学史和思想史上提出了诸多深刻的哲学问题,它们与《系辞》共同成为断辞意义问题的现代学术研究资源。

The Xici（Commentary on the Appended Phrases）was the earliest document which systematically interpreted the meanings of the words of judgment in the basic text of the Zhou Changes;it unequivocally defined the connotations of the words of judgment,explicated the origin and function of their significance,and provided fundamental exposition of different types as well as the relevance of their connotations.Later scholars provided further explications by which they set forth many incisive philosophical issues in the history of Changes scholarship and thought.All of these achievements,together with the Xici,turn out to be the resources for contemporary research on the meanings of the words of judgment.
