A Review on the Reform of Chinese Characters

20世纪的汉字改革的动因是以之作为拯救民族命运的一个重要途径。以现在的认识来看,评判汉字改革的过去和放眼汉字整理的未来,都必须以计算机汉字信息处理的效率作为最重要的标准。以此衡量,简化字的推出大大增加了汉字的总数,不仅增加了汉字学习的负担,对计算机汉字处理尤其不利;因汉字的强制合并带来计算机处理20世纪50年代之前文献时简繁不能完全自动转换的麻烦;新旧字形的规定和异体字的整理则会造成对汉字历史的假造,这些都给现代化建设带来沉重的包袱。

The agent of the reform of Chinese Characters in the 20th Century was to save our national destiny. But now we must review the past and look towards the future of the reform of Chinese Character by the criterion of the efficiency of it' s information processing. Adding simplified Chinese characters were not only a load for learned people but also an unfavourable factor for Chinese character information processing; Chinese characters having been merged forcibly brought on the inconvenient for computer processing the documents before 1950s; the new and old characters and the arrangement of the variant form of it will bring out forged history of Chinese characters. All of these will bring modernizeation drive out heavy load.
