As an important film in the early 1980s, A Lass from Huangshan presents the "occurring politics" of migrant women workers in modem China. These women embody the gender reproduction of the majority of wage labor in the modem projects of China' s reform and opening process, and are metaphors for the new hierarchical structures of the society that is constructed in the staggering interaction between history and reality. The film is not only a call for ideal nanny, but also, more importantly, an ideological call for a certain identity-rendering employed labor in the arriving socialist market economy. However, besides this "subjugated main text" that caters to the need of the time, there is a "rebellious sub-text": the sisterhood between women and socialist ethics offer emotional and political resources for the resistance of the weak.
