Diaghilev' s Balles Russes had its heyday in West Europe and North America in the early 20th century. Its emergence not only gave vitality and inspiration to British intelligentsia, but also confronted them with dilemmas. This paper attempts to trace back to its age and discuss how British intelligentsia, as represented by Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence and other artists and writers, responded, favorably or otherwise, to Russian Ballet and its dancers. In revealing the significance of this event, it intends to illustrate the great impact that Russian Ballet had on the formation and the development of British modernist literature in the early 20th century.
