The emerging typology promoted by G.C.Argan, S.Muratori, C.Aymonino, V.Gregotti, A.Rossi after World War II had its roots in the distinction between "model" and "type" by Quatremere de Quincy. Briefly speaking, what "type" distinguishes itself from "model" is that model could be precise, specific and directly turned into an object, however "type" only possesses a kind of vague generality. A typology within which such vagueness is found was regarded by Rossi leading towards the essence of urban architecture. This article, based on a retrospective etymological analysis, the authors tries to review the evolutionary reflections on "model" and "type" in architectural theory and design, from which the research on contemporary architecture could get benefit.
