The Manuscript of Ming Ke Wen Bian by Zhang Huiyan and Its Block-Printed Edition

张惠言去世后,其甥董士锡据张惠言遗稿编集,厘定为《茗柯文编》初、二、三、四诸编,并誊清为定稿本,嘉庆十四年《茗柯文编》初刻本便是据董编稿本刊刻。董编稿本先后经刘氏嘉业堂、黄节、叶恭绰递藏,后归柏克莱加州大学东亚图书馆。取稿本与初刻本相比勘,可以研究《茗柯文编》从稿本到刻本衍生过程中的沿承与新变:稿本中的大量评点唯有简短之评尚保留,被刻为眉批;刻本基本上忠实稿本原文及符号,但也会对稿本不当之处进行润饰;稿本唯编定前四编,未收之文悉数附录其后不分卷,刻本沿用稿本初、二、四编之次第,对第三编进行了篇目调整,并将稿本不分卷诸文析为补编、外编四卷。在刻本重编的过程中,删去了张惠言的三篇寿序,可据稿本重为辑佚。

After Zhang Huiyan＇ s death, his nephew Dong Shixi compiles his left manuscripts, which are revised into four volumes and made as a fair copy of final edition. In the 14th year of Emperor Jiading, the primary block-printed edition of Ming Ke Wen Bian is carved out of the compiled one by Dong Shixi. Dong＇ s edition is finally collected by East Asia Library, UC Berkeley ＇after the successive collection by Liu＇ s Jiaye Tang, Huang Jie and Ye Gongchuo. The comparison of the original manuscript edition and the first block - printed one can study the inheritance and new changes from the evolving process of the former to the latter. The manuscript edition only keeps the brief ones out of the rich comments that are later carved as the headnotes. Basically faithful to the original text and sings in the manuscript edition, the block-printed edition also modifies its improper points. The manuscript edition only compiles the first four volumes, leaving the uncollected articles all as the appendix without the classification of volumes while the block - printed one follows the order of the first, second and fourth volume and adjusts the list of articles in Volume III as well as divides the unsorted articles in the manuscript into four supplementary and additional volumes. During the process of re-compiling the block-printed edition, the three prefaces by Zhang Huiyan about the birthday are deleted, which might be re-edited according to the manuscript edition.
