Sarah Waters, a famous British female writer, is known for her historical novels featuring the description of the costumes. The thesis will analyze these descriptions of the costumes, in order to explore their discourse functions, which are to reflect the characters＇ social status, living situations, as well as psychology including recalling the past and conveying the emotions.
