摘要在亨利·詹姆斯的小说《贵妇人画像》中,主人公伊莎贝尔向往自由,积极地选择自己的婚姻。虽然自己选择的婚姻并不幸福,但她最终仍然承担起自由选择的后果,重新回到罗马。伊莎贝尔的崇尚自由、婚姻自主选择、承担责任体现了作者对人类生存的思考。以萨特的存在主义理论为指导,从自由、选择、责任三个方面对伊莎贝尔的生存现状及其回归进行解读,从而反映她的选择不是放弃了自由,而是在坦然面对中重获自由。 In Henry James＇ s novel The Portrait of a Lady, the heroine Isabel yearns for freedom and chooses her own marriage actively. Although her marriage is unhappy, she still bears the consequences of her own free choice,returning to Rome. Isabel＇s yearning for freedom, free choice of marriage and taking responsibility reflects the author＇s thinking of human beings＇ existence. This paper, based on Sartre＇s existentialism, interprets Isabel＇s existence and her return from freedom, choice, responsibility, thus reflecting that her choice does not mean that she gives up freedom, but regains freedom by taking things as they come.
