从年龄看,太宗朝宰执集团的年轻化很明显,一大批科举出身的年轻官僚很快跻身执政。太宗早年幕僚充斥枢密院,朝廷政局为之一新,形成进士把持中书,太宗早年幕僚把持枢密的局面。从宰相至枢密院执政,年龄呈递减之势。然而,宰相中老臣为主,关键时刻发挥了作用,直接承担起托孤重任。同时,宰执更换频繁,任职年限不长,皇权有所加强。
