Objective To compare the status and influencing factors of neck and shoulder pain between medical and non-medical college students. Methods A total of 1 117 college students from 5 colleges(including medical and non-medical students) were selected with the stratified randomized cluster sampling method and interviewed by self-designed questionnaires. The results were analyzed with the multivariate logistic regression for the influencing factors of neck and shoulder pain. Results The total prevalenceof neck and shoulder pain was 18.8%, and the prevalence rates were22.5% and 17.5% in medical students and non-medical students, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the two groups(P〉0.05). The multivariate logistic regression showed that, for medical students, poor quality sleep, working at desk for at least two hours each day, and heavy bags were the three risk factors influencing the status of neck and shoulder pain, while, regular physical exercises(at least 3times a week) were the protective factor. For the non-medical students, female and working at desk continuously for at least one hour were the main risk factors. Conclusion The influencing factors of neck and shoulder pain were different between the medical and non-medical college students. Therefore, to reduce the prevalence, the targeted interventions should be adopted.
