Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy of yin- nourishing,qi- tonifying, and blood circulation- activating ointment in the treatment of thirst in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. Methods: A total of70 patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis and experiencing thirst were randomly divided into treatment group( n = 36) and control group( n = 34). The treatment group received yin- nourishing,qi- tonifying, and blood circulation- activating ointment in addition to the basic treatment, while the control group received chewing gum in addition to the basic treatment. The changes in thirst score, traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) syndrome score, resting saliva flow rate, and mean interdialytic body weight after treatment were observed in the two groups. Results:After treatment, both groups showed significant improvements in the thirst score,TCM syndrome score, resting saliva flow rate, and mean interdialytic weight gain( P〈0. 05). And there were significant differences in the above indices between the two groups after treatment( P〈0. 01). Conclusion: Yin- nourishing,qi- tonifying, and blood circulation- activating ointment can improve thirst symptom in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. And it can effectively improve the symptoms due to deficiency of both qi and yin and blood stasis, increase resting saliva flow rate, and control interdialytic weight gain. The efficacy increases with the increasing course of treatment. It holds promise for clinical application.
