The relationship between the oxygen content and the types and forms of the sulfide inclusions was mainly studied for the suitable oxygen content control to improve the cutting performance of wire. Smelting process samples and finished samples were taken in fifteen heats. The influences of the oxygen content on compositions and forms of the sulfide inclusions and the cutting performance were analyzed. The results showed that the proportion of sulfide and oxide composite inclusions in steel rose with the increase of the oxygen content. The spindly or spherical composite inclusions surrounded by MnS or CaS,and with the core of silicon oxide, aluminum oxide and calcium oxide, could improve significantly the cutting performance. It should ensure that the mass fraction of oxygen of finished wire was not less than 0. 0140 %.
