Martha’s Mother is one of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s feminist works.Female economic independence,women doing meaningful work and women having their own room are important themes in this short story.By combining the social background of America in the late 19th century and early 20th century and adopting feminist literary criticism,this paper analyzes how Mrs.Joyce achieved her personal value again after being lame and how she created free space for women.This paper also discusses the importance of female economic independence in patriarchal society and the establishment of new female image.
