Confliction and Merge: Characteristics of English Teaching and Social Influences during the Republican Period in Southern Areas of Yangtze River

民国时期,中国与世界逐步接轨,作为中西方交流的工具,英语教育也进入了一个发展时期。文章以民国时期江南地区为主要考察对象,分析英语教育在特殊时期所具有的探索性、本土化、多样化等特征及其在促进社会观念转变,促进中西方文化交流,培养社会各界优秀人才方面发挥的特殊作用。

During the Republican period, China was increasingly connected with the rest of the world.English, as a tool of communication to both westerners and easterners, also entered into a period of rapid development. This paper analyzes the characteristics of English teaching-exploration, diversity, and localization. Besides, this paper illustrates the functions of English teaching to the society： turning people＇s attitudes towards the society, facilitating English and Chinese cultural communication, and cultivating talents from all walks of life.
