The word slander is a verb,which can be used（ together with other Chinese characters） to express many different meanings. For example,＂making false damaging statements＂; ＂accepting such statements blindly＂; ＂seeing through such statements＂and ＂refuting and clarifying such statements＂. Many Confucian classics have discussed its negative impact. According to Confucian,in order to refute and clarify a slanderous statement one has to be wise enough to see through it; to gain the public trust to execute his political ambition and plans; and to be a man of his own word. Enlightening Confucian ideas on＂refuting and clarifying such statements＂from both political and moral perspective can cast an unusual and new angle on Confucian ideas on ruling by virtue and self-cultivating.
