Diet affects pertbnnance, and the foods that athletes choose in training and competition will affect how well they train and compete. A good diet will help support consistent intensive training while reducing the risk of illness and injury. It will also promote the training-induced adaptations in muscle and other tissues, The purpose of this paper was to review and discuss the latest sports nutrition guidelines put forth by the Intenational Olympic Committee. Each part of guidelines is explained by using physiological rationale, research evi- dence, examples, and specific suggestions, so that information in this paper can be readily used by coaches, athletes, and sports scientists. While there is no such thing as a magic diet. there are many ways in which eating well can allow athletes at all levels of performance to achieve the specific goals of their training and competition programs.
