Objective To explore the correlation between peripheral inflammatory cytokines and executive functions in patients with first-onset generalized anxiety disorder. Method A total of 48 patients with first-onset generalized anxiety disorder in study group and 48 healthy subjects in control group were selected and assessed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) for level of anxiety, Intra/Extradimensional Set Shift (IED) in Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automatic Battery (CANTAB) for executive functions and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)for levels of IL-1 a, IL-6, IL-10. Results The GAD-7 score of study group was higher than that of control group ( P 〈 0. 05 ). The numbers of total errors, extradimensional shift errors and completed tests of IED in study group were all significantly higher than those in control group( P 〈 0.05 ). The levels of IL-1a and IL-6 in study group were all significantly higher than those in control group( P 〈 0.05 ). In study group, the level of IL-1a was positively correlated to the number of extradimensional shift errors in IED (P 〈 0.05 ) , and the level of IL-6 was positively correlated to the numbers of ex-extradimensional shift errors and extradimensional shift errors in IED( P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion Peripheral inflammatory cytokines and executive functions are abnormal in patients with first- onset generalized anxiety disorder and they are correlated with each other.
