Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT), first reported in 1998, refers to the severM orders of magnitude enhanced transmission at specific wavelengths with respect to the classical theory pre- dictions, when a beam of light passes through an array of metallic subwavelength holes. This discovery demonstrated as the first time the surface waves induced abnormal optical effects in metallic subwavelength structures. It represented a milestone of plasmonics as an emergent dis- cipline. This mini-review outlines the progress of EOT by addressing the underlying physics and devices application potentials. First, the macroscopic Bloch-mode scenario and the microscopic surface-wave approach as two possible explanations for the EOT phenomena, as well the relation- ship between the two explanations, will be presented. Second, the EOT effects based promised applications in sensing, nano-polarizes, filters, optical switching, and spectra enhancements, will be highlighted. Finally, possible challenges and perspectives of the EOT relevant studies will be given.
