To investigate the relationship between red blood cell (RBC) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) with its related factors. Methods Participants were enrolled from three hospitals in Beijing in 2012. Spearman correlation analysis was used to explore the association between RBC and MetS, and the logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the changing of risk factors of developing MetS. Results A total of 3 773 participants were ertrolled. Related MetS factors BMI, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose level, triglyceride were positively correlated (P 〈 0.05) with RBC. Spearman' s correlation analysis showed that high density lipoprotein was negatively correlated (P 〈 0.05) with RBC. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the increase of RBC level was positively correlated with the risk of MetS after adjusted for age, sex, serum cholesterol level. Conclusion People with higher RBC value have a higher risk of developing MetS. RBC and MetS with its components are related, and it can be used as a key indicator of MetS.
