Experiential Correlation and Automorphism:A Study of the Multiple Uses of English Past Tense

English past tense has multiple uses,such as time reference,counter-factuality and pragmatic softening. Experiential correlation motivates the expansion of meaning of past tense from time reference to non-temporal uses,these response concepts are elaborated through the same image content ‘distance＇.Pragmatic strengthening leads to the consolidation of the multiple meanings. Greenberg＇s case study of automorphism provides evidence for the rationality of the current study. As to the expansion of the multiple uses of English past tense,it can be said that experiential correlation is the motivation,and syntactic automorphism is the result.
