In A streetcar Named Desire,there is a hidden role of ＂ father＂ which never appeared on the stage. In patriarchy society,the ＂ father＂ is a core symbolic character of authorities. This off- stage character puts great influence on three main characters Blanche,Mitch and Stanley,promoting the development of the plot. Blanche＇s died father,symbolized by Belle Reve,drives her to escape and seek safety from father to husband,but finally leads her to the tragedy. Mitch,who is absent of father,has Oedipus complex and lack of masculinity,which is account for his failure on his love with Blanche. Stanley,has inherited all the characteristics of a father in patriarchal society. He is educated to be a ＂ father＂ without consciousness and becomes a cruel executioner of patriarchy. It expresses the author＇s attitude towards patriarchal society and sympathy to females and males who are the victims of society.
