A Streetcar Named Desire is one of the most popular plays written by the American playwright Tennessee Williams. The study on the heroine Blanche Dubois is also never short of popularity. This thesis focuses on the analysis of Blanche’ s tragedy from Freud’ s famous theory on the structure of mind ( id, ego and superego) . It is the deep influence from the southern tradition, the youthful trau?ma in marriage and the failure in self-salvation that lead Blanche to self-destruction. The conflict between Blanche’ s id and supere?go and the ego’ s failure in mediating among the id, superego and reality caused Blanche’ s tragedy.
