德里克·柯蒂斯·博克是美国当代著名高等教育家。他在《走出象牙塔——现代大学的社会责任》一书中,系统阐释了他的大学的社会责任观。他认为,现代大学要坚守学术自由、学术自治和学术中立三项基本学术原则,这是象牙塔的基本精神,但是更应该主动走出象牙塔承担社会责任。博克的大学社会责任思想对我国大学发展至今仍然具有十分重要的现实意义。

Derek·C·Bok is a famous contemporary American higher educator. He systematically illustrated the social responsibility of university in Beyound The Ivory Towe--The Social Responsibility of the Modern University. He believes that it is necessary to adhere to the three basic academic principles--academic freedom, academic autonomy and academic neutrality, which is the basic spirit of the ivory tower. However, the modern university should walk out of the ivory tower to bear more social responsibility. His idea of social responsibility of university still has great realistic significance for the development of universities in China.
