During 1940 to 1944, Novel Monthly edited by Gu Lengguan, is regarded as the fi rst magazine in Shanghai, obviously refl ecting the general features of the magazines in this period. These magazines usually start with traditional writers selected by traditional editors, and then are quickly replaced by young writers with experiences and thoughts of New Culture Movement, tending to develop an integration of tradition with innovation which features in introducing modern ideas and thoughts of the West with popular language, techniques, and forms. Novel Monthly, compared with its contemporaries, seems more elegant and theoretic with more actual concerns.
