Shan Shili was wife of the famous late Qing diplomat Qian Xun and sister-in-law of Qian Xuantong, one of the key figures in the New Culture Movement. As a diplomat's wife, she travelled around Asia and Europe with her husband and kept travel notes. She was regarded as one of the first Chinese women who "walked out of the lady's chamber to see the world". While living abroad, Shan kept up correspondence with Qian Xuantong and shared with him her experiences and comments about historical events such as mediation during the Russo-Japanese War and negotiations during the second Hague Peace Conference. In the current paper, seven letters from Shan Shili that have been made by Qian Xuantong into albums are published for the first time. These letters reveal a late Qing intellectual female's patriotism and her rethinking and aspirations about China's awakening.
