Shengming Electric Light Ended the History Without Electricity in Yantai

19世纪末,烟台人的日常照明靠的还是油灯、电灯,对于大多数人来说是一种可望而不可及的奢侈品。坐落于烟台市芝罘区广仁路21号的生明电灯公司,是烟台华商筹集民间资本、独立经营电力和照明事业的见证。生明电灯股份有限公司创办于1913年1月16日,由商人张润暄、王子雍联络政记轮船公司张本政和烟台天成栈、泰安恒、双盛泰等大商号投资10万银元成立。现在看到的生明电灯公司旧址建于1920年的,为砖混结构的二层楼房,占地500平方米。

In the late 19th century, the Yantai people made use of oil lamps as their means of daily lighting. The electric light was a luxury within sight but beyond reach for most people. Situated at 21 Guangren Road, Zhifu District, Yantai,Shengming（Light-Generating） Electric Light Company was a witness of the Yantai businessmen to raise private capital and independently run the cause of electricity and lighting. Shengming Electric Light Company was founded on Jan.16,1913 with the 100 thousand silver dollars sponsored by the businessmen named Runxuan Zhang and Ziyong Wang who contacted Zhengji Shipping Company＇s Benzheng Zhang and such big finns in Yantai as Tianchengzhai, Taianheng and Shuangshengtai. The old site of Shengming Electric Light Company now invisible was built in 1920 as a two-storied brick concrete structure covering an area of 500 square meters. With the gate seated east and facing west, the tour slopes were roofed by gray tiles and supported by a wooden frame-up structure. In the ladder-shaped layout of interior courtyard, the walls between windows were decorated with ceramic tiles and supported by the wall footing made of Maogu stones. Up at the entrance is a triangle Yamahana wall with the roof embellished with lavish antique moldings. The door of the hall is arch shaped and the second floor has a balcony. It was built by Yantai Decheng Construction Factory.
