The present study aimed to investigate the influence of English proficiency on the recall of morphologically complex words. A group of Chinese- English bilinguals were assessed on their English proficiency, and exposed to a list of inflected, derived and mono-morphemic words in three forms( i. e.,visual, oral and a combination of visual and oral). Accuracy of recall results showed that mono-morphemic words were recalled best, followed by derived and inflected words, which indicated that the participants seemed able to decompose morphologically complex words in the task and were more likely to do so for the inflectional than for the derived words. Furthermore, the advanced learners had a stronger awareness of word structure for the morphologically complex words than the intermediate learners.
