杨慎的卒年卒地,上个世纪八十年代初有过激烈的争论,但因为可据材料的有限和材料本身的真假难辨,一直悬而未决。本世纪初,随着董运来、丰家骅先生对《明文海》中游居敬《翰林修撰升庵杨公墓志铭》的发现,此讨论终告一段落。然仍存在个别疑问,如李元阳《升庵七十行戍稿序》记杨慎嘉靖三十八年冬由泸至滇,这就导致杨慎卒于昆明而非永昌、卒于嘉靖三十八年七月之说的可疑。本文在指出旧说不合理的同时,试补充三则材料,用以强化杨慎嘉靖三十八年七月卒于昆明高峣寓所的可信性和毋庸置疑。
