After the cold war, Japan' s national role has experienced a shift from a "civilian power" to a "normal state" . In this process, two important bilateral structures of interaction dominating East Asian politics, U. S-Japan relations and Sino -Japanese relations, determine the role Japan should play and the formation of its behavior. Faced with different role expectations from China and U. S. in the context of the two structure of interaction, the Japanese government has attempted to resolve the internal conflicts in taking its role through role alternation and role transformation, in order to maintain the regional stability in East Asia, Under the second Abe administration since 2012, the Japanese government obviously has deviated from China's role expectation and attempted to change the current situation, which has done damage to the common expectation of East Asian countries and contributed to a rise of distrust between each other. The "Abe diplomacy" is still at an initial stage of role taking and fails to change the international political pattern in East Asia as it has planned. Eventually, Japan has to be back to take the role as it did before the time of the second Abe administration.
