汉族这一名称始于汉朝,形成于中原地区。这是因为中华文明发轫于中原地区,夏、商、周三代的政治、经济、文化中心也在中原地区。夏朝建立之后,华夏族的名称也随之产生,到了战国时期,华夏族与居住在洛阳附近的少数民族融合,使华夏族更加壮大,逐渐成为汉族的前身。秦王朝虽然短暂,但在全国范围内实行的车同轨、书同文等政策,加速了汉民族的形成。秦朝之人被称为秦人,到了汉朝,秦人改称汉人,汉人有了共同的语言、共同的地域、共同的经济生活以及共同的心理素质,形成了事实上的汉民族,而"汉人"的自称和他称的出现是汉民族民族意识增强的表现,也是在形式上对汉民族形成的认同。
